As Apple decides to build the Newton, a personal digital assistent
(PDA), the original core team thought about an allday companion,
which carries all data of its owner and share these if he wishes
to do so. Sure, it should be as intuitive as a piece of paper
while using all the new technologies available. After trying this
and that with different processors and a diffrent number of them
(68k, 88k and the AT&T Hobbit) they decided to use the ARM 610
CPU manufactured by ARM Ltd. (now Advanced Risc Machines), a successor
of the ARM family from Acorn UK.
Bun Warmer
The first (lab) model was constructed by using two plasitic layers
seperated by around 3" long bars. On the upper layer was the display,
on the lower the motherboard. Because this "thing" got realy warm,
the team called it "bun warmer". It's a shame, but I've got no
pictures of this dinosaur... but I'm working on it.
